Driving Bits and Buckles from Betsy

Why should you take a driving clinic this year?

The basics of ground driving (driving from behind) and long-lining (double lunging on a circle) are invaluable to the saddle horse as well as driving prospects.

Ground driving allows you to work a young horse without weight on his back and with more control than just lunging. It enables him to develop his own balance and avoids the additional stress of weight on young joints and tendons. The horse can be introduced to the bit and reins before he is mounted, allowing a smooth transition to under saddle work. A horse recovering from injury can be ground driven in an arena, working without the stress from small circles or weight carrying.

An older horse may also benefit from a tune up in long lines to develop obedience, suppleness and flexion. Both techniques can be used to warm up a frisky mount before climbing aboard. The only equipment you need to to get started is : a lunge whip, an open bridle (no blinkers), a saddle or surcingle, two lunge lines and of course, gloves.

For those of you who are interested in progressing further in the field of driving, equipment can usually be borrowed to help get you started before making a big investment.
